James Marshall found some flakes of gold at a place called Sutter’s mill on January 24th 1848 and transformed California.Pioneer John Sutter owned a sawmill on the south fork of the American River in Coloma, California. It was at this spot while building the mill, that Sutter’s employee James W Marshall found some chips of gold on January 24th 1848. They tried to keep the gold a secret, but of course the word got out. Over the course of the next seven years about 300,000 people went to California hoping to make their fortunes.
