T...May 22 was a brutal day for Grant's forces. The "Forlorn Hope" was actually a detachment of men under Gen. Sherman's command, located on the right of the Union forces. It attacked along the appropriately-named Graveyard Road, seeking to provide a concentrated breakthrough point. The 22nd Iowa and Leonidas Godley served in Gen. McClernand's corps, to the left of the line.
